HAYSON
MANNING
AUTHOR
OF:
Rad-Reader: What made you want to tell this story?
Hayson: This story was churning away in my head for a while. Along with
other things in my head just quietly. A man who can't feel the sunshine
and a woman who finds the positive in everything. Plus throw in the boss and
employee troupe, and I couldn't write it fast enough. It was such a laugh
picking out all the men's names Billie called Mason.
Rad-Reader: Where did the idea come from?
Hayson: I'd just finished a really good boss and assistant book. I wish
I could remember it. I thought to myself, I can write a story about a
closed-off man who believed he didn't have a soul and the woman who pulls him
kicking and screaming into finding love. Plus, it is set in my New Zealand
where I was born.
Rad-Reader: How did you about developing Billie and Mason
as characters?
Hayson: They grew with me as the story grew. Mason admires Billie more and
more with her smart mouth, fun personality. Billie becoming more confident as a
woman. Mason seeing that there is more to life than making money and moving
from one project to the next. He learned to slow down and smell the
roses.
Rad-Reader: What is going on with Mason that his so
ridged?
Hayson: Poor old Mace. His mom died
when he was little. His dad didn't know how to deal with a grieving child so he
shipped him off to boarding school where you survived by not showing any
emotion. He fell hard, married until a tragedy pulled the marriage apart.
He believes he's had his shot at happiness.
Rad-Reader: For a split-second, Mason seemed human when he
was sad and then smiled what stops him from allowing himself emotions?
Hayson: Mason has trouble with his emotions. He's such a man! He feels
if he opens up and lets himself feel he'll be hurt again. I had to drag him
kicking and screaming into Billie's arms.
Rad-Reader: Does he not cherish something enough that he
wants to rip the heart of the home and town out?
Hayson: For Mason, the house is
just a house. A business transaction. He's always moving from one renovation to
the next. Running figuratively and emotionally from his past/emotions. It
takes him a long time to see the beauty of the house, the area, and the harvest
festival.
Rad-Reader: What happened to Mason’s wife and daughter?
Hayson: Mason's daughter died of SIDS. He blames himself for not coming
home earlier and checking on her. Mason tried to make it work, but their grief
could not be shared, and they divorced.
Rad-Reader: He did seem to need Billie for her help. But did part of him realize how lonely he was
and how much she added to his life?
Hayson: He did eventually! Yay for
a happy ever after. Billie slowly got under his skin. She wouldn't sit in the
formal dining area but in the big cozy kitchen where he'd eventually join
her.
Rad-Reader: Did Mason want to like Billie but was afraid
since he lost his wife?
Hayson: Mason was quite happy to go through life on his own. He'd had
his one shot at happiness and didn't think it went around a second time. He
liked the feel of her in his arms and would then freak out and be a bit of a jerk
at times.
Rad-Reader: Do you think Mason will see what she did for
her town as a betrayal?
Hayson: Yes, I think he would. He'd placed a lot of trust in Billie to
get the house sold so he could move on, so when he found out about her going
behind his back, he was hurt.
Rad-Reader: Did Mason get jealous when Billie tells Hank
she would wear her bikini and stilettos for him? Not knowing he’s eighty-seven?
Hayson: Mason had a caveman
reaction! He didn't want Billie (but secretly did) and didn't want anyone else
to go on a date with her.
Rad-Reader: Who called it quits on the marriage him or his
wife?
Hayson: Monica left when she couldn't get through to Mason. He couldn't
talk and buried himself in work. Monica has since remarried and had
children.
Rad-Reader: So, Not being in a relationship is it a form of
punishment?
Hayson: No, I don't think he ever saw not being in a relationship as
punishment. He is content to go through life on his own. By throwing himself
into work, he doesn't have to think about his past or deal with emotions.
Rad-Reader: Why did Mason have to be so mean to Billie
the morning after the storm?
Hayson: He was scared and became a jackass! He loved being in Billie's
arms, and it scared him, so he shut down. Poor Billie. I would have thrown a
stapler at his head!
Rad-Reader: For those who don’t understand the reference
can you explain why Sarah calls Mason, Heathcliff?
Hayson: Billie and her BFF Sarah
grew up in Footsteps Bay. Billie and Sarah would sit and imagine Heathcliff
calling for his Cathy in the house Mason wants to renovate. With Mason being
tall, blue-eyed and dark hair is what they imagined Heathcliff to be.
Rad-Reader: How did Billie meet Sarah?
Hayson: Billie came to Footsteps Bay as a teenager. Her mother is a
roamer, and Billie has craved roots and stability. She asked if she could finish
high school and stay at her best friend's house. She and Sarah have been
friends they were fourteen. Her mother was happy to leave her daughter and roam
the world.
Rad-Reader: Was Billie’s ex-gay? Or in love yet, she couldn’t get a rise out
of him at all?
Hayson: Billie's ex, James, wanted
away from the life that his family had planned for him. Billie wanted roots and
was in love with James. They married the day they finished high school. Billie
tried to make the marriage and romance work, but James wasn't into her. Billie
lost a bit of herself and sparkle. They divorced.
Rad-Reader: Would you call Billie a plus size girl or not? Or just curvy?
Hayson: Billie is however you see
her. :)
Rad-Reader: OMG!
Mason is not going to bail on their date, is he?
Hayson: Oh, he tried. He tried everything to get out of it, but Billie
stuck to her guns and demanded a date since he'd denied her Tractor Man who'd
bid on her at the auction.
Rad-Reader: He wants her but doesn’t? Yet, doesn’t want another man to have her
like Troy? So, what does he want?
Hayson: Poor old Mason doesn't know what he wants. His heart says
Billie, but his head is telling him to run away. The man is giving himself
whiplash!
Rad-Reader: Was the screen saver the breaking point and
at the same time turning point for Billie and Mason?
Hayson: Yes, it made Mason look at his past and confront his feelings
for the loss of Ruby and his feelings for Billie. Billie, on the other hand,
thought that by showing him that Ruby will always be in his heart and that he
loves deeply if he let himself.
Also, when he called her Billie for the first time. She'd become
a person, not a number.
Rad-Reader: Why does Mason give his secretaries a number
instead, using their names?
Hayson: Mason calls Billie Forty-Two as she's his forty-second
assistant. Billie finds a note from forty-one:
Dear Forty-Two
I'm off to haul uranium - it's easier.
Best of luck,
Forty-One
Rad-Reader: Because Mason does this Billie has her own remedy
for this, that just was the funniest thing.
What does she do and why?
Hayson: Billie calls him every name but Mason. I had a blast. She calls
him Septimus, Jimbo, Horatio, Wilfred. The list goes on. She won't call him
Mason until he calls her Billie.
Rad-Reader: If your book is made into a movie who would
you want to play…
Billie: Alexandra Daddario
Mason: Justice Joslin
Sarah: Amelia Zadro
Stanley: Paws Pinterest
Hayson:
Billie: Dakota Johnson
Mason: Charlie Hunnam
Sarah: Brie Larson
Rad-Reader: If you could be a superhero who would you be?
Hayson: Wonder Woman. She has an
invisible plane and the lasso of truth!
Rad-Reader: If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
Hayson: If I won Powerball there's a small Pacific Island near Fiji with
my name on it.
Rad-Reader: What is your next project and when will it be
coming out?
Hayson: I am relaunching Bound to the Bounty Hunter which has two books
that will be coming out this year - two more books in this series. I'm
also working on a new series - Worst Kiss Ever...not
Rad-Reader: Where can our readers buy your books? Links
Hayson: Here are the links for different books from my website. I hate
always pointing to one retailer.
Rad-Reader: Where can our readers find you on the Web? Links
Hayson,
Thanks so very much for being with us. I so enjoyed your book it gave me a good laugh the way Billie kept poor Mason on his toes. Not to mention how she gave him a taste of his own medicine with all the many names she chose to give him for calling her Forty-two. Forty-one's note was funny too.
Thanks again for being a joy to work with also,
Char
Thanks so much for hosting me I had a blast.
