Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to rise again…
The hilarious new heartbreaker from Mhairi McFarlane!
If there’s one thing worse than being fired from the grottiest restaurant in town, it’s coming home early to find your boyfriend in bed with someone else.
Reeling from the indignity of double dumping on the same day, Georgina snatches at the next job that she’s offered – barmaid in a newly opened pub, which just so happens to run by the boy she fell in love with at school: Lucas McCarthy. And whereas Georgina (voted Most Likely to Succeed in her school yearbook) has done nothing but dead-end jobs in the last twelve years, Lucas has not only grown into a broodingly handsome man but also has turned into an actual grown-up with a business and a dog along the way.
Meeting Lucas again not only throws Georgina’s rackety present into sharp relief but also brings a dark secret from her past bubbling to the surface. Only she knows the truth about what happened on the last day of school, and why she’s allowed it to chase her all these years…
MY REVIEW:
What a complex story of a girl’s life over
twelve years. How she graduates thinking
she has the tiger by the tail, along with the love of her life, Lucas McCarthy. With her hope of a second chance.
Yet, like an onion being peeled the events
in her life lead to who she has become today.
One party, one death, one rejection, one betrayal…all lead to a woman
who is happy with her life when people are not telling her she shouldn’t
be. Mind you the loudest are her
family. The people that should have her
back.
She admits therapy has helped to sort out
a lot and she had already known and lost the one in high school so, the ones
after, have not held a candle to that feeling.
It’s not that she didn’t care or want to be in that current relationship, she
just knew she was their stopover.
When she finds Robin boinking his PA in
the most unusual way she is mad and upset.
Especially, after six months together.
Yet, when he says I thought you understood I don’t believe in monogamy,
and we agreed to an open relationship.
She caught the plural, so he meant more than his PA.
What got her is he wanted to talk it out
because they were good together. Meaning
he liked collaborating with her. You see he does stand up so, for his act since
she helped write a lot of his material. Now
he wants her back. He needed her more
than she needed him, and he knew it.
See how the spiny web tangles and Georgie’s
life becomes a showground of public banter.
How and who come to her aid but how she saves herself alone. Such power.
I loved the twist and turns of this quirky
story. The characters are off the wall
and eccentric having a way of keeping reading.
I give this: 5++++ stars. Provided
