Eight years ago, she broke his heart.
Eight years ago, he vowed never to let her hurt him again.
Now, they have to work together to keep their town safe.
At the age of sixteen, Val Garcia made the worst mistake of her life. She trusted the wrong guy, and hurt the guy she loved. She can never atone for that one mistake, but she’s trying.
As a cop, Spencer Murdock is trained in the art of evasion, but that isn’t helping him avoid the pariah in his life...his first love, Val. It doesn’t help that as the town baker, his friends and coworkers are always moaning over her cupcakes. Yeah, it sounds dirty to him when they do it, too.
Now, he has to work with her daily, see her daily, listen to her soft voice and see her smooth skin...daily. And daily he’s seeing her more as the girl he fell in love with, not the girl who destroyed him.
There’s no way they can have a second chance. That trust is broken. But every day there are glimpses that make them both ask...what if?
MY REVIEW:
Past loves and second chances are always fun to read. To see where an author will take a couple is always fun. This author did not disappoint.
If there was a reading group like this around heck, I would have joined it a long time ago. At Em Dash the combo book store owned by Kali and bakery owned by Val Garcia two best friends.
Although Kali is on vacation in Kenya leaving poorly stressed out Travis to run it. He is in way over his head. Not to mention in the throes of finals at the college. Bad timing on Val’s friends part not to mention the pre-holiday season, some friend. But new boyfriend yeah well, we all see how that works. LOL.
Here is the kicker, Kali made Val promise she would help Travis with the guidance she is not prepared for his daily freak outs along with her own. You see for eight years Val has held a secret from everyone about her past. As the town sees it, she’s a saint.
So, since the anniversary of her ex’s, Taylor death and her true love ex-Spencer’s mom’s death, dying in the same accident. Her guilt feels endless. Not that she caused the accident but that she ever broke up with Spence that year and dated Taylor at all.
But at sixteen you make dumb choices. Now, will her and Spence back in the same town together it’s hard not to stare. When in the same room or area together. He does all he can to avoid her.
Until one day he walks into her bakery to ask her questions about a case. It didn’t go well at all. Then they are thrown together to do a PSA campaign for safety for the stretch of highway where Spence’s mom and Taylor were killed. The second day was harsh. He saw Mick the new sexy firefighter walks her to the radio station, and he was not happy.
But when he sees her out to lunch with Mick yeah not any better. There is never a dull moment with the characters at the bookstore/bakery and with Spencer’s brothers. Then you add Val and Spence’s sexually charged banter and bedroom romps and Yup, it is good!
