THE OLD MAN

THE OLD MAN                                                THOMAS PERRY

To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don’t have multiple driver’s licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Thirty-five years ago, as a young hotshot in army intelligence, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase reacted according to his own ideas of right and wrong, triggering consequences he could never have anticipated. And someone still wants him dead because of them. Just as he had begun to think himself finally safe, Chase must reawaken his survival instincts to contend with the history he has spent his adult life trying to escape. Armed mercenaries, spectacularly crashed cars, a precarious love interest, and an unforgettable chase scene through the snow—this is lethal plotting from one of the best in crime fiction.

PAT'S REVIEW

This was a book that I really did not know if I would like or not when I received it from Netgalley or not. Turns out I really enjoyed it. The story begins with a man named Dan Chase who is 60 years old and appears to be a retiree, but you find out as the story goes along is nothing close to being a retiree. You also find out about his life 30 years ago being with the military intelligence and his mission to deliver money to a person in Libya. He stayed to see if said person did what he promised to do with the funds. When he saw that it was not going to the people that needed the money he took matters into his own hands. Now 30 years later people want him to pay with his life for his choices back then. He has other ideas and makes the people following him pay. You follow him across the country and into Canada. This was a book with a lot of action but also intrigue as well. I liked the characters of Zoe who leaves with him, and Julian. Julian character is questioning why they are after this man, and it turns out he is like him but 30 years later. As Julian finds little bits at a time, you as the reader does as well, and the story begins to fall into place. A very good book. I got this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars.
