Maverick Davis is coming home because his sister asked him to be there for the funeral of their father the man he hated. He has been gone for ten years and made it big on the rodeo circuit, but now that is over after the last fall. Leighton James is holding her best friend and really Sister Quinn on her other side is the Davis’s older brother Clay, they were there for her when her parents died and she knew she needed to be her for them, but where was Maverick he told Quinn he would be here. When Leighton took one last look to the back of the church she knew the cowboy standing in the back with the black hat tipped down to show his face was him, she had, damn insides still in love with that ass since she was a little girl and ten years ago he ripped her heart out. When the service is over and people leave he walks up to his brother and sister says some very unkindly remarks to the third person there not knowing that it is his sister’s best friend Leighton. She reminds him of what he said ten years ago and as they drive out to parking lot gives him the bird. You may think the fireworks are over, but no. He shows up at her place called the pie hole and when she asks him what his problem is, he tells her that she has everyone favorites pie out but his. She tells him hold on goes to the back already have made a few of his favorite cookies & cream and brings one out madder than an hornet and proceeds to hit him in the face with it he then picks her up and kisses her and you can see where this is going. They have issues to work out. When he finally is able to be with her alone and start to explain things he begins with that day when he hurt her so bad and how sorry he was for that, but he didn’t know how to do it differently because he knew she would have followed him anywhere and that she would have missed her parents. He slowly tells her other things and as he begins to open up to her she begins to realize that there was more that was going next door than she could ever imagine. The relationship that they begin to build is field with layers, of past and present and you are taken back to see how and why his life was different than his brother and sister. There are many funny moments, sad, and some real loving times in this book. The author really takes you on a journey and shows you that yes in Leighton eyes she was no ugly duckling any more, but in Maverick’s eyes he always thought she was always a swan and really that is what mattered anyway.
