It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.
Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.
As the body count mounts and Kat's hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved—her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.
HUBBY'S REVIEW:
This is a book filled with suspense and intrigue, the main character is Kat Donovan, who is still dealing with the murder of her father 18 years ago also a NYPD, Detective. She feels that she has never gotten the truth from anyone about the death of her father. His former partner is now her Captain and her mother just does not want to talk about it. When the man who pleaded guilty to the murder dies in prison, his last words to her was I just pleaded guilty for someone else for they already had me on the first two murders and what’s a third. Kat always think that a certain mob boss had her father killed as she is working on that she is shown a missing persons case by a young man that she does not think it is a missing persons case at all. It starts with an on line dating, and during the responses back and then going through some of the photos on the site she comes across a picture of her former fiancé who her best friend now had never knew of. As all of this is going you get a look from the criminal side of the third story line in the book. This story line is some very intense writing for what is going on feels very real and the way he writes it makes you feel like you are right there with the victims. Kat who is also having issues with her partner is now finding him to be very helpful and is actually finding some information out on the boys’ mother who is in fact missing along with two other people that they know of. Kat finds out some information about her father that makes her sad not angry and does not know whether she should tell her mother and then as the missing person case gets more intense the last part of the book you really don’t want to put down. As the case of the missing person turns out to be more than just that and you see Kat and her former fiancé try to work things out you find out who killed her father. This is a very powerful story and once you get past the half way point in the book you really don’t want to put the book down. Full of mystery, murder, intrigue and just a fantastic book. I got this book from net galley.
