Mike Taggart has always been willing to take a gamble. But these stakes are just way too high - there's no way he's prepared to become a legal guardian to his five-year-old niece. His only option is to head from Las Vegas to Last Chance to sort things out as quickly as possible. Problem is, he arrives to find an inconsolable little girl, her sick cat, and a gorgeous veterinarian he can't get out of his mind.
Charlene Polk has two talents: healing sick critters and falling in love with the wrong men. Mike has trouble written all over him, but she can't leave him in the lurch. And the more time she spends with the sexy high roller, the more she sees that this ready-made family is the best stroke of luck they've ever had . . .
HUBBY'S REVIEW:
Mike Taggert, arrives in Last Chance with his niece Rainbow and a cat named Tigger. He had lost her bear somewhere on the flight from Chicago, where two days ago he found out that his sister had been murdered and Rainbow, had witness the event. He was now her last living relative and he being a professional gambler did not think it was a good idea to raise a 4 almost 5 year old child in Vegas. So here he was tracking down his half-brother Timmy, who just happens to a Pastor of one of the local churches in town. Mike does not make any first good or even second impressions on the first people he meets in Last Chance. For one Tim, the Pastor does not remember him of his father talking about every living in Chicago, so he hires a private investigator. The cat caught something on the trip, so when he takes it to the Vet that goes wrong, and then that same person turns out to be his neighbor when he is feeding Rainbow dinner, frozen pizza. Slowly things start to change for Mike and Rainbow, the people of Last Chance want to help and he becomes friends with the neighbor who also helps to get Rainbow to finally speak. By the end of the story both Mike and Charlene, are becoming more than friends or at least would like to, but each has issues from past relationships that need to be worked out and Charlene biggest is her parents and their racism. Once she does she can allow for Mike and Rainbow into her life, now she must along with some other folks get Mike to see. That Rainbow has grown attached to him and that if he leaves her to go back to Vegas it would be like when his sister was killed. He is also filling guilty for leaving his sister when he turned 18 and then she became addicted to drugs and then being killed. But now he is braiding Rainbows hair and reading her stories at night and even singing a song called,” Pete the cat “. A great story and Hope Ramsey, does it again bringing serious issues that would be in any town, but how a community comes together to help out. I really enjoyed this book. I got this book from net galley.
