LET’S WELCOME DONNA GRANT
AUTHOR OF:
Rad-Reader: What was it about this story that made you want to tell it?
Donna: I was asked to write a Christmas story by my publisher, but they wanted a cowboy story. I was intrigued at the idea. And it didn't take long to come up with an idea of a prodigal son returns home. I usually only have an idea before I start writing. I don't plot out books, so all I need is an idea to get going.
Rad-Reader: Do you create your characters or do they create themselves?
Donna: I fully believe they create themselves
Rad-Reader: How about Abby and Clayton? How did you go about creating them?
Donna: I didn't. Just as I don't analyze how I'm able to write a story without plotting, I don't try to overthink my characters. I want them to be relatable, I want them to have flaws just like everyone does.
Rad-Reader: How do you come up with your titles?
Donna: lol. I don't. My publisher comes up with the titles.
Rad-Reader: Where is this story set at? What country/town?
Donna: It's set in a fictional town in Texas.
Rad-Reader: Abby is so tired and overwhelmed and overworked. Why did her mother just leave her and the boys?
Donna: Why does anyone do stupid things? Because they think only of themselves and no one else.
Rad-Reader: What was the doing in the South of Africa?
Donna: The book begins in South Africa where Clayton is working.
Rad-Reader: Where does Abby work? What classes is she taking?
Donna: She works at a CPA firm and is taking college courses for an accounting degree.
Rad-Reader: Do Ben and Justine know why their son was staying away?
Donna: Yes.
Rad-Reader: Has Clayton ever had a steady girlfriend before?
Donna: Although I don't go into it, I suspect that he has.
Rad-Reader: Abby seemed to panic when Clayton said he wanted her in his life all the time. Why?
Donna: She has abandonment issues.
Rad-Reader: What do you think Gloria will do when she says she is quitting?
Donna: I honestly don't know. I didn't get into that in the book.
Rad-Reader: Danny gives Clayton time to search for clues and for Brice to think about whether he can give up info after all. Why? And what does Danny know?
Donna: Because Danny knows Brice has the answers, and he knows that Clayton can get it out of him. Danny doesn't know anything more than what Clayton finds out and shares with him.
Rad-Reader: If your book was made into a movie would you like to play…
Abby: Zooey Deschanel

Shane: Kevin Costner

Donna: I get this question a lot about my characters. I always love seeing what people come up with. Sometimes its pretty close to what I see in my head, other times its way off. I can't look at a picture and try to form them to fit my characters because I don't base my characters off anyone (picture, movie, etc). They come together on their own. So I could spend weeks looking through actors and still be looking for just the right fit. :)
Rad-Reader: What song best describes your couple or your book as a whole?
Although Abby felt broken and tired. She and her brothers had been left behind by her mother. Yet fearful, she was able to open her heart to Clayton's family and eventually Clayton himself.
"Still Believe In Crazy Love - Ryan Kinder"
When they knew it was right they had this built in from Ben & Justine.
"The Rest of Our Life - Tim McGraw & Faith Hill"
Donna: I actually have playlists for all my books. These are songs that play a part of the book either while I'm writing it or they make me think of a character. Check out the playlist here:

Merry Christmas Strait To You

Rad-Reader: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Donna: Coffee ice cream
Rad-Reader: What do you like to do on your day off from writing?
Donna: Shop, read, or watch movies
Rad-Reader: How long did it take you to become a published author?
Donna: It took me six years to get an offer from a small publisher where I sold over 25 books, and another two years to sell to a New York publisher.
Rad-Reader: What advice would you give to a young author?
Donna: Write, write, write. Stop worrying about editing and just get the whole book down. Then you can edit, but you have to write the whole story.
Rad-Reader: What is your next project and when is it due out?
Donna: I release books every month, so I'm always in the middle of edits, copy edits, and deadline. My next book out is the final book in my LaRue series - MOON BOUND - that releases December 26th. Then January 30th is the 12th book in my Dragon King series - HEAT. For all of my upcoming releases, you can check out the "Coming Soon" page on either www.DonnaGrant.com
