Let’s Welcome The Author of: BURIED TREASURES: Mary Manners
Let’s Welcome
The Author of:
Mary Manners
Rad-Reader: Where did the idea for the story come from?
Mary: Wow,
that’s a tough one. This story wove into my heart over a number of years. It’s
formed from bits and pieces of ideas and experiences…even a few dreams.
Rad-Reader: Caroline was scared to stay with the memories
but she had stayed a year why leave now?
Mary: Caroline
knew that in order for her to provide a healthy and happy future for Callie
that she had to start anew and leave the old, unhappy memories behind.
Rad-Reader: When she got to her Aunt Nora’s home, she was
a bundle of nerves. But was already
feeling attracted to the man that was there working on it for her. Matt Carlson had promised Nora before she
passed that he would help. He was
interested too. What was her fear to
begin again or lose again?
Mary: Caroline
had a fear of both beginning anew and losing someone she loved. She was steeped
in old habits, and breaking free of those habits was difficult for her, as it is
for many of us.
Rad-Reader: Callie was a spitfire. She really made the story jump. She seemed to be the glue that bonded
everyone, especially Paul. Was she like
his little angel to soften his heart?
Mary: Yes,
you are exactly right on that point. Sometimes looking at life through the
innocent eyes of a child can soften the bitterest heart.
Rad-Reader: Caroline showed Paul what a mother was like and a
friend. Yet, a strict parent when he
needed that night he acted out too. Do
you think she gave him the courage to at least open up to his mom?
Mary: Yes,
I do. He was looking for both acceptance and boundaries, and he found them in
Caroline.
Rad-Reader: How did Matt end up with Paul and not the
grandparents?
Mary: They
felt that Paul needed a strong male influence. Matt was able to offer that. In
the beginning, Matt wondered whether he had what it took to fill the bill, but
he soon found out that with God’s guidance, he could do it.
Rad-Reader: Sue seemed to really wanted Matt and Caroline
together. Was she working with Matt or
on her own to help that along?
Mary: Oh,
she was working on her own. But I don’t think Matt minded the help one bit!
Rad-Reader: What project could possibly be so important
to be called in for an emergency on the Easter holiday weekend?
Mary: Well,
when it comes to money some people know no boundaries. Matt was caught between
a rock and a hard place. He didn’t want to lose his position, but he also
didn’t have the same feelings about the urgency the city council expressed. I
think he learned to stand his ground.
Rad-Reader: Now Callie said Paul had kissed Andie’s hand
because she had gotten a splinter and he kissed the boo boo like her mommy
did. Why did Sue and Matt say it was not
a very rated “G” kiss?
Mary: Because
they know how impulsive teenagers can be, and the proper guidance is paramount.
Paul and Andie are good kids, but even the best kids can make poor choices due
to their lack of wisdom and experience.
Rad-Reader: Andie and Paul seemed like good kids. Teens not minding having a kid around, going
to bible study, offering to help their neighbors…Why were Sue and Matt so
worried? They had them pretty active and
most of the time they were with them.
Mary: Both
Sue and Matt had seen a lot of destruction due to poor choices. They just
wanted to keep Andie and Paul walking the path God planned for them.
Rad-Reader: What do you think was the turning point for
Matt when he knew He had fallen for Caroline and Callie?
Mary: I
think this happened following Paul’s difficult night. Matt saw Caroline’s true
heart, as well as her forgiving and compassionate spirit. He knew then with
certainty that she was the one for him.
Rad-Reader: What scared Paul about giving his mom a
chance?
Mary: He
was really afraid of being let down again, of having his world shattered. Once
the trust between a parent and a child is broken, it’s really difficult—not
impossible, but difficult—to rebuild it.
Rad-Reader: Did Caroline help him on that solarium to be
near him, help him, or to let him know she was different than Mandy?
Mary: Caroline
wanted to do all three, but mostly she wanted to be near him. She had to give
herself a little nudge to get past her insecurities and fear, and the solarium
provided the perfect opportunity.
Rad-Reader: If your book was made into a movie who would
you have play…
Rad-Reader: What song out today best describes your two
main characters or the story as a whole?
"Look No Further" - Dido
Mary: “Praise
You in this Storm” – Casting Crowns
Rad-Reader: Who encouraged you the most to be the writer
you are today?
Mary: My
dad. He was such a giving, wonderful man. He encouraged me from the time I was
a little girl. He passed away 15 years ago and I miss him every day, but I
still write for him.
Rad-Reader: When did you know you would do it full-time
one day?
Mary: Oh,
when I was in middle school. I read books and wrote all the time. I knew then
that I would ‘make it.’
Rad-Reader: What would you say to the young Mary if you
could?
Mary: Never
give up. Keep writing and believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that
you can’t do it. You CAN.
Rad-Reader: Who gave you the best advice at the
beginning?
Mary: The
librarian at my elementary school, Miss Moreale. She told me to read everything
I could get my hands on and to keep dreaming and working hard. She was a
beautiful woman.
Rad-Reader: What is your next project and when will it be
out?
Mary: I
am working on a 12 – novella series called Honeysuckle Cove. The first four
books have released and the next eight will be available, one per month, on the
first day of each month through 2017.
Rad-Reader: Where can our readers buy your books?
