Welcome

Author of:
You can't hide from love...or revenge.
Dodge Loving wants revenge…and he’s about to get it. On the cusp of closing a multi-billion-dollar luxury resort deal, Dodge can’t afford for anything go wrong. But then a fiery redhead shows up, the paparazzi hot on her trail, and throws his world into chaos. He has to get rid of her. Immediately.
Harper Conner just wants to be left alone, but after slapping her cheating senator ex-husband during a televised press conference, she's a hot commodity. The ultra exclusive resort in Wyoming seems like the ideal place to hide—and work—so there’s no way she’s letting the Type-A jerk who runs the place fire her.
Despite the animosity sparking between them, Dodge and Harper can’t keep their hands to themselves. This thing between them can’t happen. It won’t. But his mother has other ideas…and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make sure Harper and Dodge fall in love.
Rad-Reader: What made you want to write about a wealthy biracial
family?
Avery: Well, Dodge just
popped into my head one day along with his mom May and I spent an hour
wandering around Target (you know how that happens) and working the plot out in
my head.
Rad-Reader: I
can see how hatred fueled Dodge Loving, a man of mixed black & white races,
but how did his mother May, a white woman, became so overly calm about the
family?
Avery: I think
it’s May’s coping mechanism. She realized that going crazy wasn’t going to get
her any results so she just let all of the negativity go.
Rad-Reader: How
did his dad and brother's seem so indifferent to the whole situation?
Avery: I don’t know
that they’re indifferent so much as they wrote off the grandfather as not worth
their time. Plus, none of the brothers had the guilt that Dodge takes on by
thinking that he was the reason that the grandfather disowned May.
Rad-Reader: Harper
Connor received a backbone when it came to Dodge but why not everything else?
Avery: That really
was her ARC. She had to learn how to stand up for herself after spending her
life being told over and over and over again to put her needs second. She was
raised to think of herself as a prop for someone else rather than as a
full-fledged person with her own wants and needs.
Rad-Reader: Was
Harper’s change and anger really directed at her husband or at herself?
Avery: Oh! That’s
good! You know, I think you’re right. I think she was mad as hell at herself
for allowing other people to determine her value instead of determining it for
herself.
Rad-Reader: The
paparazzi were looking to make the money shot for the tabloids. Couldn’t Dodge have just played it cool and
just taken all interior stairs then go to the upstairs library and close the
drapes so no one could see in? Didn’t he
call more attention to her being there?
Avery: Ha, well that
would have taken all the fun out of things. ;) Plus Dodge isn’t the kind of guy
to leave something to chance. If he kills a spider, he’s going to squish it and
then flush it and then double check that it went down.
Rad-Reader: Harper
seemed to live such a programmed life growing up and then during her marriage
that you could understand her rebelling.
But if Dodge’s mom knew then why didn’t she put a stop to his plans
sooner?
Avery: That
really comes down to May’s philosophy that things will work out for the best in
the end. For all her matchmaking ways she really wants to give her boys the
chance to find the answers for themselves.
Rad-Reader: Why
didn’t May ever point out his behavior running very close to his
grandfather's? When he was so by the
book?
Avery: I’m not
sure it would have made much of a difference if she had. There are somethings
we all have to learn for ourselves.
Rad-Reader: You
referenced the biracial factor with his granddad but other than that it did not
make a difference to the characters or the reader. In other words you no longer saw color when
reading. How hard was it to do? Sometimes it can become preaching when trying
to win over a reader?
Avery: I don’t think
it’s hard at all. When it comes down to it, romance is about the characters not
the color of their skin.
Rad-Reader: How
did you come to start writing about blended couples? I
noticed several of your books have this theme.
Coming from a blended family it’s nice.
Avery: I
believe that romance should reflect the world we live in so there should be
characters of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, etc. Romance readers
deserve nothing less.
Rad-Reader: If
your book was made into a movie who would you want to play:
Avery: Excellent
choices! I’d actually go with
Rad-Reader: What
song out now reminds you of your book “Dodging Temptation?”
Kelly Clarkson-Mr. Know It All : Harper's Song
Jason Derulo-It Girl : Dodge's Song
Avery: Oh! This is
hard because I don’t tend to do a lot of music with my characters. I love your
choices though!
Rad-Reader: What
is your next project?
Avery: I have so much
fun stuff coming up. On Oct. 19, the Seven Sins anthology comes out (only
99¢) and that was a really fun project to get to work on. I had the sin of
sloth. Then on Nov. 9, the last in my Killer Style books comes out.
Designed for Murder is the story of Mika Ito and Carlos Castillo who just might
fall in love while their dodging bullets!
Rad-Reader: What
is your favorite season?
Avery: I am a warm weather summer girl.
Rad-Reader: What
kind of genre would you like to try but are not sure about?
Avery: I love to read
it all, but I’m not sure I could take on historical. I think I curse too much
to be authentic. :)
Rad-Reader: What
would your younger self tell you to do that you’re not?
Avery: Drive a convertible. Too bad it’s a minivan
for me. :)
Rad-Reader: Where
can our readers find you? (Website?)
Avery: I’m all over social media, so come hang
out: Website, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook
page, Facebook
profile
Rad-Reader: Where
can our readers buy your books?
Thank you Avery for taking the time to do this interview. I loved the book. I enjoyed how you made Harper find her backbone finally after so long, how May was such a free spirit, and how you turned the Alpha Male into a pussy cat.
This was such a fun story and a fun interview for me to be my ever "FANGIRL!" You too are now part of the family. Thanks again and come by and visit anytime.
